The Shoe
The purpose of the Blackburst shoe was to perfect my 3D product development processes.
From the initial sketch designs to modelling, texturing, lighting, rendering, and compositing. Take a look below!

Stage 1
Research
For the most part, I knew what I wanted going into the design of my shoe. I wanted to push for a bold, techwear-inspired foundation with the familiarity of classic looks created by Vans and Converse.
I used these reference images to create the base outline and technical drawings required to push my concepts into 3D.
Stage 2
AI Exploration
It is vital to understand the potential of AI in concept development. I like to use it to quickly run through multiple variations of my core ideas to piece together something I think can work.
Prompt: A 3D model of a shoe, inspired by popular brands like Adidas and NewBalance, black, white and leather on a studio background, hyper realistic.
Stage 3
Modelling
Using a subdivision and modifier workflow I’ve been able to keep the modelling process lightweight and adaptable to changes I’ve decided to make during the process.
Having a low poly count is a must when using this method. Once the base of the shoe was complete I made slight imperfections to the model to add to its realism.
Stage 4
Texturing
To add complexity and believability to the shoe, I incorporated several materials such as leather, fabric, rubber and foam.
As I used both procedural materials and traditional physically based rendering materials, it allowed for flexibility when needed, so I could change variables like the pattern’s scale or colour.
Stage 5
Lighting and Rendering
To make the shoe look like a product photo, I placed it in a studio environment with a white backdrop - which is synonymous with most real imagery used by online retailers. I plan to continue and push this project further by moving into animation.
